Is InviziGrain easy to use? ↓
Is InviziGrain easy to use? ↓
Absolutely. Step 1, choose a film stock. Step 2, press play.
Is InviziGrain accurate? ↓
Is InviziGrain accurate? ↓
Sure is. Using a combination of calibrated film scanners, OLED monitors, dozens of custom test charts, we actually shoot side-by-side test charts of every film stock we emulate. Combined with a double blind test, we ensure the output of InviziGrain is indistinguishable from the real thing.
Is InviziGrain customizable? ↓
Is InviziGrain customizable? ↓
Yes. While the plugin offers 1-click presets, every feature is customizable: from film stock, to color, to grain size & intensity, and all the effects parameters too!
Where do I put the InviziGrain plugin in my color workflow? ↓
Where do I put the InviziGrain plugin in my color workflow? ↓
We recommend you put it on a Timeline node (rather than on individual Clip nodes) - and after all of your other color correction effects/nodes. This will allow InviziGrain to be the easiest to control. By default, InviziGrain's luminance mapping and effect sensitivities are looking for footage that's already been graded, so this will work best.
Does InviziGrain use real film grain? ↓
Does InviziGrain use real film grain? ↓
Yes! We created our own grain scans of real film stocks, scanned on 4K and 6K film scanners, and the plugin randomizes those grains so you never have repeated or looped grain. (well, only once every hour). Question for Nathan: if the shadow grains use different grains, then you'd only have a repeat…. every 1,000 hours.
Can InviziGrain simulate 16mm or Super16? ↓
Can InviziGrain simulate 16mm or Super16? ↓
Absolutely. It turns out 16mm film is much harder to emulate convincingly. InviziGrain really shines here because it can recreate the movement of 16mm's huge grains as they dance around in the shadows, giving 16mm its signature magic. It can even simulate 8mm or Super8mm's insane graininess.

What are Shadow Grains?↓
What are Shadow Grains?↓
In the underexposed (shadow) regions, real film gets very grainy. The grains you see here dance around a lot and are bigger than other grains (this is just part of the physics and chemistry of film). Shadow Grains accurately simulates this so that your nighttime footage or darker exposed areas have a truly realistic look to them!
What is Pre Blur?↓
What is Pre Blur?↓
This simulates film's pleasing creaminess. Film stock is a bit softer than a CMOS or CCD sensor due to its lower MTF (sharpness). Pre Blur allows you to simulate this. Interestingly, acutance (the chemical "sharpening" of film when it's developed) makes up for this, which is why film still looks "sharp" and contrasty. But, they don't cancel out exactly: that's what gives film its unique texture.
What the heck are Edge Threshold & Edge Reduction? ↓
What the heck are Edge Threshold & Edge Reduction? ↓
No need to touch those :) but if you must know, film grains visually appear to scatter less around well-exposed object edges, and this slider controls that.
How do I adjust the luma map?↓
How do I adjust the luma map?↓
Easy. In the Luminance Mapping section, just click on View Luminance.
Can I control luma-mapping? Shadows? And highlights? ↓
Can I control luma-mapping? Shadows? And highlights? ↓
Yes! Just adjust the Shadows and Highlight sliders at the top of the plugin to push grain into the blacks and highs of your clip. You can also play with the Luminance Mapping to get even more control.
Can I use my own film grain?↓
Can I use my own film grain?↓
Absolutely! Just drag your grain clip into the Node view in Resolve and plug it into the bottom (mask) input on the InviziGrain node.
What if I don't want InviziGrain to change the color of my footage? ↓
What if I don't want InviziGrain to change the color of my footage? ↓
Just turn off "Use 3D LUT" and InviziGrain will only apply film grain, but not touch your project color.
What if I want to sculpt the contrast and look of my footage without making it grainy? ↓
What if I want to sculpt the contrast and look of my footage without making it grainy? ↓
Simple. Turn Grain Intensity and Texture to 0. Then just activate Acutance, Pre Blur, and Red Bloom. You'll be able to dial in different light scattering and spatial contrast effects without adding any graininess to your project.
InviziGrain is making my text and credits too grainy. What do I do? ↓
InviziGrain is making my text and credits too grainy. What do I do? ↓
Easy. We recommend putting all text on another layer, above/after InviziGrain is applied. It turns out that in the old days, credits & text were actually applied after filming, using something called an optical printer, and on totally separate special low-grain, high-contrast film stocks: so those old movie credits stayed pretty clean. That's why your text might look too grainy!
Footage↓
Should I use InviziGrain on RAW/LOG footage or on colored footage? ↓
Should I use InviziGrain on RAW/LOG footage or on colored footage? ↓
We like to use it on colored footage. It's easier to dial in the final look of your project if things are already graded.
Does InviziGrain support REC709, ACES and P3? ↓
Does InviziGrain support REC709, ACES and P3? ↓
Actually, InviziGrain supports ANY color space you're working in. It runs in linear 32-bit float, leveraging Resolve's huge native color space. However, we recommend that you run it once your footage is already graded since it's easier to see the film grain effect at that stage.
Does InviziGrain work on iPhone, GoPro, A7S or other non-RAW footage? ↓
Does InviziGrain work on iPhone, GoPro, A7S or other non-RAW footage? ↓
Absolutely! In fact, InviziGrain adds a dimension to compressed video formats that takes the digital edge off and gives these cameras new depth. This allows them to stand up alongside - or intercut with - footage from much higher end cameras, like Alexa or RED.
Do I need to de-noise footage before running InviziGrain? ↓
Do I need to de-noise footage before running InviziGrain? ↓
In most cases, unless there is very significant video noise in your footage, you don't need to de-noise it first. (Technically all video noise should be removed before applying any film grain, if you're a purist…but InviziGrain's effect usually obscures any noise present in video footage)
Can I use InviziGrain to match the film footage I have?↓
Can I use InviziGrain to match the film footage I have?↓
Absolutely. You'll first need to match the color of your existing footage. You can do this by shooting a Macbeth chart on both your video and film cameras, at the same time, in the same lighting. Then you can use Resolve or 3D LUT Creator software to match the video clip to the film clip. Tutorial here: XXXXX. Then you can use InviziGrain to match the qualities of the film footage. In this case, we usually recommend de-noising your video footage if you want a very tight texture match. You can either shoot your own grain plate (here's how!) to pipe into InviziGrain's User Grain Input OR use one of our built in plates and eye-match it to your film footage.

What's the difference between InviziGrain HD and Unlimited? ↓
What's the difference between InviziGrain HD and Unlimited? ↓
HD only supports projects up to 1920x pixels wide. If you need to process a 2K (2048) wide project for theatrical release, DCP, or streaming, OR a UHD or 4K project, you will need the Unlimited license. HD is intended for indie filmmakers, music videos, online content creators, documentary films, shorts, V-bloggers, and personal use.
Can I upgrade from InviziGrain HD to InviziGrain Unlimited? ↓
Can I upgrade from InviziGrain HD to InviziGrain Unlimited? ↓
Yes! The cost of your HD license will be applied to unlimited. That way you can buy HD now and if you need unlimited later, the upgrade cost is just the difference.

Does it run in real time? ↓
Does it run in real time? ↓
Yes! However, if you have all the features on and you're running 4K footage, you'll need a serious GPU or even multiple GPUs. InviziGrain literally rebuilds every frame of your footage out of layers of film grains called silver halides. These layers interact with each other which takes a massive amount of processing power - more than any other film simulation plugin. That's how we achieve this level of realism.
Does InviziGrain use CPU?↓
Does InviziGrain use CPU?↓
Hardly any CPU is used, as it's all GPU accelerated. If we ran on CPU it would run about 100 times slower.
Why does InviziGrain use so much GPU power? ↓
Why does InviziGrain use so much GPU power? ↓
Because InviziGrain doesn't just overlay grains on your footage - it literally rebuilds every frame out of layers of grains, and then scatters light between those layers - just like in real 35mm film - and all in real time. To do this requires immense computational power.
